Wildlife Project, Dir: Karolina Sobecka, 2007

Wildlife is an art installation by Karolina Sobecka. The way it works is that animation is projected on the walls of the city from a moving car, the animation adjusts itself to the speed of the car. In this a tiger runs faster when the car goes faster and stands still and looks around when the car is stopped. It's quite clever and interesting. It would be nice to see it pushed further in the interaction.

"Elephant Girl", Dir: David Lobser, 2007

"Elephant Girl" is a short film directed by David Lobser. There is a little of Ray Ceasar in the design, but not as detailed, and something of a David Lynch fascination... But overall it's quite pleasant.

Dreaming of Lucid Living, Dir: Miwa Matreyek, 2007

Dreaming of Lucid Living is a performance/installation piece directed by Miwa Matreyek. Her CalArt graduation film last year had caught my attention. This piece, built like a shadow puppet theatre, integarting live performance and animation, is quite poetic and quirky with nicely composed visuals.

Tower Bawher, Dir: Theodore Ushev, 2007

Beautifully crafted short film, directed by Theodore Ushev, as an homage to Russian constructivist art movement and more specifically architect Vladimir Tatlin.

"Un Jour Ordinaire", Dir: Yue Wu, 2006

This is a great hand drawn animation short film, in fact a graduation short... directed by Yue Wu. It follows a young man walking down the street, his headphones on and just day dreaming... I thought it was really good and cool for a graduation project.

Vodafone "Cartwheel", Dir: Ringan Ledwidge, 2007

Are You Anybody Favorite Person? as a good quality Quick Time

Great little simple short film with an amazing cast including Miranda July and the fantastic John C. Reilly.

Blonde Redhead, Dir: Mike Mills, 2007

I'm having a little bit of a Miranda July moment as everywhere I turn at the moment she appears and its always a good thing... more to be added...

Minilogue, Dir: Kristorfer Strom, 2006

I had forgotten about this lovely piece of animation directed by Kristofer Strom.

He has just directed this lovely campaign for Zonatura... I know I'm a sucker for any silly little character with a quirky voice... oh well...

Beat Crusaders "Tonight, Tonight. Tonight", Dir: 小島淳平, 2007

Now this is an interesting way to make a band fly off their feet... The band is famous for always hiding behind masks with their real faces on, this is just taking it to another level. It is just great...
The video won Best Rock Video in Japan at the Space Shower Music Video Awards this year.

The Wombats "Let's Dance to Joy Division", Dir: ?, 2007

This isn't a wow music video, nothing really new visually or conceptually, but there's not much new at the moment, and it's not that bad either, so here you go.

Mum 'Rhubarbidoo', Dir: Overture, 2007

Jason Malcolm Brown and Aya Yamasaki Brown are Overture, a duo of illustrators based in Japan. Their work is reminiscent of 70's children tv/books and European and Japanses comic book artists of the same periode, in terms of style and colours and that's probably why I liked the nostalgic side to it. At the same time their illustration work is very contemporary.

WKTokyoLab Re-Invention, Dir: Amautalab, 2007

Katerine 'Excuse Moi', Dir: Petra Mrzyk and Jean François Moriceau, 2007

I'll let the non-French speaking look into how the lyrics translate. But this is a really lovely music video directed by Parisian artist duo Petra Mrzyk and Jean-François Moriceau. Both universes Katerine's own as much as theirs, simple line hand-drawn and quite sassy and sexy in its topics, was well suited for this song.

'Frank Kafka Ein Landarzt', Koji Yamamura, 2007

Director Koji Yamamura's latest short film is doing the round of the festivals and winning awards. Not surprising when you have a look at the trailer as the film looks extremely beautiful and complex. Hopefully soon to be shown in London.

PS2, Dir: Yumiko Ito, 2007

Really fun little commercial from Japan directed by Yumiko Ito, a more stylised take on the ball effect.

Emily Haines & Soft Skeleton 'Our Hell', Dir: Jaron Albertin, 2007

First I really like the song itself. Then the music video is beautifully made and lit on negative/thermic camera, where they have created some really intriguing visuals (the only thing I'm not sure about is the clown though). Anyway this visually stands out and they have achieved something very interesting.

Chemical Brothers "Salmon Dance", Dir: Dom & Nic, 2007

Dom & Nic with Chemical Brothers have always been a winning combination and this is another success. This latest collaboration is a great track, a truly fun idea and great directing. If you ever wondered what would happen if Nemo went out clubbing... it would be something like this.

Thunderlittle, Artist, Hong Kong

Thunderlittle is an amazing young comic book artist based in Hong Kong, I stumbled on an article about her work and find it really beautiful. Unfortunately she is not published outside of HK and she doesn't have a portfolio online and everything is in Chinese, at least for the time being so watch out for her work.

The Gorgeous 'Great Minds', Dir: Oliver Groulx, 2007

Canadian director, Oliver Groulx has created this music video for The Gorgeous in which he mixes live action, animation, motion graphics to create the environment in which the band evolves. Watch it here.

ZZZ 'The Grip', Dir: Xelor, 2007

I'm not a big fan of the final result for this music video but the concept is quite entertaining: to recreate video effects with a trampoline and some people carrying big signs.

Remi Nicole 'Go Mr Sunshine', Dir: Family, 2007

Family at Colonel Blimp have directed this music video for Remi Nicole, with some colorful box stop-motion. It looks quite inspired by Australian street artists who have created a
crate man in Melbroune...

'Mon Oncle', Dir: Jaques Tati, 1958

Jacques Tati, one of my favorite director, has never seized to surprise me. I had totally forgotten the opening tittles for 'Mon Oncle', which I feel now were fairly ahead of their time considering that they are probably a hundred music videos at the moment based on the same principle. Simple and graphic.

And if you dont mind French, then watch this 1947 short film Tati directed L'Ecole des Facteurs Part 1, Part 2

Tex Avery, Director

For fans of the cult director, the Blog Animation Id has spotted a documentary on Tex Avery on you tube. Enjoy!

Ray Caesar, Artist

Discover the weird and wonderful world of Ray Caesar. This British born artist has turned his back to animation to dedicate his time to his art. His pictures are completely created in 3D and the result is really beautiful. You can read more on how he works on his website in the Working Method section. Don't forget to read a really funny biography as well. I find his work fascinating.

Erwin Olaf, Photographer

And now for something a little dark and beautifully photographed. Erwin Olaf has created this series of pictures of women in a state of fusion with the room they are in. It's just one of many of Olaf's work which is beautifully lit and framed, with rather dark themes that are meant to be unsettling, but not deprived of a certain dark sense of humor (I think, or hope).
