Jeff Keen, Artist and Experimental Animator

Londoners put in your cultural agenda that next month you are going to see some films from Jeff Keen at the BFI.
Jeff Keen is a British visual artist who started experimenting with animation in the 60's (mixing collages, hand-drawn, stop frame, live action). His work is relevant and inspiring, with its very distinctive graphic quality, drawing inspiration from "cowboy films and b-movies, pulp novels, comics, and 50’s men’s magazines". Now in his eighties, Keen is still around and working (or re-working old pieces).

Marc Boutavant, Children Book Illustrator

Marc Boutavant is my favorite children illustrator. His new book called "Around the World with Mouk" (ISBN 978-1854378545, for the English version which is not out yet) is absolutely beautiful, printed on fine shiny paper on which you can play with a selection of non-stick stickers located at the end of the book for added fun (having offered a few copies to lucky French children for Christmas I can guarantee it never fails to entertain). What is amazing in this new book is the wealth of details and the sub-stories in each scene. You can see a lot of work and attention has gone into it.
Marc Boutavant's simple characters and colourful designs are just a real joy.

Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle is exhibiting the work of Dutch artist Chris Berens until the end of January.
Chris Berens' art is inspired by 18th century painters, but translated into his owm fantasy world, a quite dreamy one, full of mystic creatures and iconic figures. He has also developed his own painting technique of ink on plastic, the plastic is worked in sections and layered before being laid on wood panels to create the final piece, giving it a really unique finish (learn more about it by watching an interview of the artist on the Roq La Rue website).
Obviously no link can do justice to a painting but hopefully his work will reach a gallery near you soon.

The Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York is hosting a James Jean exhibition until 7th February. A good excuse to mention the work of this American artist, whose work is really incredible. James Jean is part of this contemporary wave of American painters whose work is rooted in illustration and street art. I like the poetry, sensuality and sometimes dark nature of his work, caught in between dreams and nightmares.

'My Paper Mind' was directed by film student Javan Ivey using an adaptation of the Stratacut Technique on paper ("Stratacut removes material to reveal another layer, while this technique adds another layer while still showing the layer before it").
It looks quite hypnotic.

Megaforce are a young French directing trio made of Leo Le Bug, Spamstudio and Clement Gallet.
This MV for Naive New Beaters has that DIY feel reminiscent of the self made Go Team! videos. There is an 80's feel to this as well, it doesnt take itself seriously, using basic simple keying to create a wonderful visual choreography with lots of humour. I'm sure it wasnt as simple as it looks to make, they have made the most of one trick without ever getting boring which is quite an achievement in itself.

"Our Time Is up", Dir: Rob Pearlstein, 2005

'Our Time Is Up' is a truly wonderful short film (nominated for an Oscar at the time) directed by Rob Pearlstein. It tells the story of a psychiatrist whose sudden realisation of his own mortality changes his relationship to his patients overnight.
Although the story is nothing new in the way it is structured, this is a heart warming short piece with some memorable performances and lots of nice subtle touches in the directing.

His installations are made using everyday objects which in turns by their large numbers or arrangements form a distinct picture of modern life. With a special take on the fashion scene with his Bubble Series, Attitudes series and Fashion Collaborations all made of mannequin posed provocatively and dressed in the latest fashion.
His work is vibrant, poking fun at our modern life and may be loss of identity.

Bill Plympton, master of animation and wonderful weird tales is back with a feature film this year that tells the story of an reluctant angel.

Plympton describes the genesis for the feature on the film's website:
"The first recollection I have of the concept was an event in 2005, when I was walking with a student at the Lille Short Film Festival in France, and he asked me what my next feature would be about. I declared, off-handedly, that it would be about an angel who didn’t want his wings, and as we discussed the idea, I really got to like the concept. That night, in my hotel room, I started to explore the dramatic possibilities of a reluctant angel.
At that point, I had just finished production on “Hair High”, and although I thought it was a great film and would make me rich, it was a very difficult production - so, I decided that “Idiots and Angels” would be the exact opposite of “Hair High”.
While “Hair High” was bright and colorful and fully animated, “Idiots” would be monochromatic and more limited in its animation. While “Hair High” had big-name actors providing voices, “Idiots” would only have music and sound effects, no dialogue at all. My new short film “Shuteye Hotel” was a short rehearsal, an experiment done in the new style of “Idiots and Angels”.
Because this film has no dialogue, I wanted music to play throughout - almost like a long opera - or an extended string of music videos. The look of the film is very Eastern European - something like what Jan Svankmayer might make, or David Lynch if he made animation - very dark and surreal."

Now I'll just be honest and say that this track is utter rubbish, some might find it offensive to their hears in more than one way. It's bad club techno stuff and if that's not your trip do turn the sound off before you watch. Some people may like it but I just hate it. Oh well.

Nevertheless Dutch illustrator Piet Parra's animation here is fun and that I like a lot. Quite in the air du temps if you see what I mean (2D animation, quite flowing, illustrator led). So I couldnt dismiss this one just because of the music.

Wildlife is an art installation by Karolina Sobecka. The way it works is that animation is projected on the walls of the city from a moving car, the animation adjusts itself to the speed of the car. In this a tiger runs faster when the car goes faster and stands still and looks around when the car is stopped. It's quite clever and interesting. It would be nice to see it pushed further in the interaction.
